Book Proposal Submission Guidelines

Proposals sent to Rice University Press should be in English and submitted electronically to fred.moody@rice.edu.

Proposals should include a brief description of the book, its subject, and the arguments it makes. The proposal should discuss how the book fits in with the existing literature, and how it contributes to the body of knowledge in its subject. It is important also to define the book’s audience, and include information on your background, qualifications, prior publications, and why you are suited to write this book. Feel free to attach your c.v. to the proposal.

Finally, the proposal should include information on the size of the book, what illustrations and other non-textual or multimedia elements it might include, a table of contents, and—if available—a sample chapter. We would also like to hear why you think your book is particularly suitable for the Rice University Press digital platform.

Receipt of proposals will be promptly acknowledged.

We are presently assembling a peer review panel to assess books in Art History, which will be the first discipline on which Rice University Press will focus. As we grow, we will be adding peer review panels in other disciplines.

We are interested in looking at proposed books outside of Art History only if they have been accepted for publication by other university presses who may be unable to publish them because of cost or other prohibitive factors, or who wish to publish on Rice University Press’s digital platform. Such books could be published under either our Rice University Press imprint or our Long Tail Press imprint, as a co-publishing venture with the publisher who has peer-reviewed and accepted the manuscript. We are also interested in republishing, as Long Tail Press titles, books previously issued by other university presses. Such titles would be published in partnership with the previous publisher.

Until we expand our press into other disciplines, we cannot consider new book proposals outside of Art History if they have not been peer-reviewed and accepted by other university presses. We are not able, at this early stage, to properly evaluate such proposals.

As Rice University Press grows, we will be incorporating other subject areas, and accepting and evaluating book proposals in those disciplines.
